Features to consider when choosing a moon lamp
Before you dive in and purchase a moon lamp, take some time to consider the available features. We’ve created this list to help you understand what you can expect and what will work best with your needs.
There is no shortage of design ideas with moon lamps. Conventional moon lamps offer you an orb that lights up with a stand to place it on. These standard moon lamps include the Athena Futures Moon Lamp.
If you want a standard design with a touch of color, then you can consider a few other models. These include the Logrotate Moon Lamp and the Segoal Moon Lamp. With these models, you get a moon-shaped orb that also changes colors. They are perfect for kids’ rooms and can even act as nightlights.
For adults, there are plenty of options, too. For instance, the VGAzer Moon Lamp has a magnetic feature. Simply place the moon orb above the base and by the power of magnets, the orb will actually float above ground.
Finally, for those that want their moon lamp to really be the focal point of the room, try the MQ Moon Pendant Lamp. It hangs from the ceiling and can instantly transform your kitchen into a true celestial area.
Light colors to choose from
Moon lamps usually come in two standard colors. You can choose from a warm yellow or a bright white, and often you can switch between the two colors all from one lamp. For example, the VGAzer Moon Lamp allows you to choose from these two colors, or dim back and forth between them.
Other moon lamps, specifically those that market themselves to kids like the Logrotate Moon Lamp and the Segoal Moon Lamp, have many different colors to choose from.
What’s really nice about moon lamps with multiple colors is that you can choose the colors from a remote control. They are so easy to control, you can even let your child navigate them. Simply press the corresponding color button on the control and your moon lamp will instantly change to that color.
Unfortunately, not all moon lamps have the ability to adjust their brightness. There are a few models, however, that allow you to choose from three brightness settings. These models are usually the ones that also have different color choices.
Other light features include the ability to slowly dim in color, or even to alternate between multiple colors. The best models on our list for different settings are the Segoal Moon Lamp and the Logrotate Moon Lamp.
In this regard, the MQ Moon Pendant Lamp is also worth mentioning. While it is a more sophisticated ceiling lamp, it also has a dimming function. This is actually impressive as many LED bulbs are not dimmable and thus it can be hard to find the right bulbs for a kitchen light.
Moon lamps are measured in diameter because they are spheres. The average is roughly around 6 inches in diameter. You will find some models that offer multiple sizes, which lets you be more in control of your purchasing. Models such as the Segoal Moon Lamp and the Logrotate Moon Lamp have multiple sizes, ranging from 4 to 8 inches in diameter.
The outlier on our list is the MQ Moon Pendant Lamp. It is a ceiling lamp with a diameter of 14 inches. It also comes with a 6-foot cord although you can adjust this length so that it hangs right where you want it to.
Smaller sizes are great for kids’ rooms, especially if you want them to act as a night light. Larger sizes are better for larger rooms.
If you want to be really innovative, you could actually purchase multiple moon lamps and have them lined up to act as a faux galaxy. Include lamps of different sizes to represent the different planets to teach your children about space in a fun and interactive manner.
Charging and working time
Most moon lamps have a rechargeable battery built into them. This means you can charge the lamp ahead of time and have it ready to use for continuous light. Charge time is usually 2 hours and working time is 6 to 12 hours.
The working time really depends on if you will be using and special effects with the lamp. For example, if you have a dimming option or a blinking option, this will use up more of the battery and your working time will be on the lower end of the spectrum.
With the exception of the MQ Moon Pendant Lamp, which hangs from the ceiling and is controlled by a switch, moon lamps have a battery for their power source. You will need to charge the battery, usually in the form of a USB cable.
Some users find that they prefer to have their moon lamp plugged in the whole time they are being used. This allows users to not have to worry about charging. Instead they simply plug their USB cord into an adaptor in the wall.
If a bulb is required
Moon lamps work with LED bulbs. The good news is that not only do these bulbs last a very long time but they are also included with your purchase. Moon lamps are quite economical and you don’t have to worry about too much maintenance with them.
