Almost every aspect of our lives is being enriched by some form of ‘smart’ technology. The Philips Hue is a great example of how more and more everyday things are starting to be impacted by these new devices. In this article we’re exploring the best lamp for Philips Hue, enabling you to make use of the benefits of this smart light, being able to control it with your voice, set times from your phone and even alter the light temperature to mimic daylight.
In this guide, we’ve looked into a wide variety of lamps in different designs and styles. There are a number of options in terms of size and looks, but also some technical considerations. We’ve looked at compatibility (which ‘smart’ devices and home controllers the lamp can communicate with), as well as the warranty and, of course, the quality of the product.
Our team has spent a huge amount of time looking into the Philips Hue technology and the products which have sprung up as a result, using first-hand experience and consumer reviews to create our guide. The information is presented as a handy table to see the qualities at a glance, and also in-depth reviews and a detailed buying guide, which should help you find out which features you value most, and ultimately, the best lamp for your home.
This classic design sits flush against the ceiling of your room and has such versatility, hence the Philips Hue Beyond Dimmable LED Smart Ceiling Light being named our ‘best overall’ lamp for the Hue technology.
It looks like a very simple design, and the installation is very straightforward, it can go anywhere you would ordinarily have an overhead light and to glance at it you may not realize this is a ‘smart’ technology lamp.
Like many of these lamps it has the ability to shine in millions of different colors, which gives almost limitless choice, and as long as you use it with the Hue Hub and Philips Hue App then you can have endless control over the lamp. It can not only change color on demand, be controlled by your voice on Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple HomeKit, it can also synchronize to movies and games, to create an ambient and immersive feel.
This lamp is compatible with the many extras which Philips provide such as dimmer switches or motion senses. This means you can make it come on ‘on demand’ or have extra controls over the brightness. It also means you don’t always have to use the app to control it.
Generally, the Philips Hue Beyond is one of the most versatile options and its compatibility with all of the accessories and lots of smart home tech means it is definitely our favorite. This does come at a cost, as this is not a cheap product.
The Philips Hue White Ambiance Flush Mount is another model which sits flush against a ceiling surface. The design is quite subtle and simple and is the sort of lighting you might associate with an office or a more modern home design.
Like the other products on the market this has the ability to be controlled from a smart device, and when expanded with the Hue Hub you can also link it to your smart home device for voice control, letting you turn it on and off or make other changes with your voice. This is another light which can be compatible with the added accessories which Philips make for the Hue, for instance, the dimmer or Hue ‘tap’ technology. It also works with a huge amount of smart home hosts.
This is a simpler design than some other lamps, as it only offers white light, though it does have a huge amount of shades of white, over 50,000 to be precise.
For the fullest control, you will need to buy the Hue Bridge too, which can be an extra expense, and there are a couple of negatives to this product. The Ambiance model uses an LED strip for its lights, rather than a bulb. This means once it is broken you can’t simply swap it for another bulb.
There is a two-year warranty from the manufacturer to protect your purchase. To get the most out of the light you should probably buy other Hue accessories, which can add to your costs.
The Philips Hue Go is not only one of the more affordable options on the market, it is also one of the easiest to use. It offers a lot of features and while it is a bit different to many of the ‘permanent fixture’ lamps on the list it has just as much to offer.
This is a totally wireless and portable option. You can charge it up and get three hours of use without being plugged in. This is great for taking out and about on trips or using outdoors on a summers evening.
Just like many of the permanent fixtures, this has an incredible 16 million colors or tones that you can control yourself with ease. You can alter these from your phone or other device, and connect with the Hue Hub in order to gain even more control such as timing and ‘wakeup’ functions or mood lightings.
This is even simpler due to the fact you can simply turn it on and off on the device. Some users have criticized other Philips Hue Lamps due to the fact that you often need to use the apps or voice control, but this can be controlled without if you need. It does work with the motion sensor or dimmer if you plan to invest in these items.
Pairing with your smart home via Alexa, Apple, Google assistant or even Nest or SmartThings is relatively simple, and this is probably the simplest lamp if you just want to get up and running quickly.
This is a great option for those who like to control their mood and energy using light, and though it doesn’t have any sorts of colors, the wellness option has over 50,000 different shades of white, allowing you to choose between energizing brightness or more relaxing hues to help you relax in the evening.
The light has some properties which could help with issues such as Seasonal Affective Disorder.
This is really easy to set up, it just has to be connected to the Philips Hue Bridge and you will be able to control it using Amazon Alexa, Apple Homekit, Google Assistant and Nest.
The product has a 60-watt equivalent bulb within. It comes with a two-year warranty and is easy to set up. If you’re not too bothered about colors and want the ability to dim the light easily this could be a good option.
What we liked:
Helps with disorders affected by light, such as SAD
This is another model which is a ceiling mounting version of a Philips Hue lamp, and has an aluminum design which can be great for many bathrooms, kitchens and offices.
In terms of design and features, it is hard to fault, and this lamp has all of the features of the other Hue family. It works with Google, Amazon and other smart home apps, and uses the Hue app to allow more control such as timers.
Though this is all very positive, there are some down sides, which is why it is not quite the very best out there. A lot of users have found this very hard to install, and when you compare it to some of the products which simply plug in and go, you will probably be a little frustrated with the more complex design of the Ambiance.
If the design is what you are looking for then you may well opt for it, but it isn’t as modern and intuitive as some of the other lamps on our list. It is a little limited in colors with no RGB, it just has numerous shades of white rather than being adjustable to a lot of different colors.
This needs the Hue Bridge to get the most out of it, and just like the other products on our list it works best if you can combine it with accessories. The flush mount design is one of the best looking Philips Hue lamps, and it comes with the two year warranty we’re used to with this range of lamps.
This outdoor bulb is excellent for use in all kinds of weathers at it is resistant to all sorts of weather conditions. The spotlight is great for lighting up specific areas or features within your yard, or even lighting up a pathway.
This doesn’t come with the power supply, so this is something to bear in mind when making your purchase. Setup is very easy, though. All you need to do is plug in and connect up to the hue hub and you can create amazing looks in your garden using the 16 million colors available.
For reliable connection you should keep the Lily spotlights within 30 feet of the hub (or closest hue network light) in your home. Some materials like metals can also block the signal.
You can expect this to last up to 25,000 hours lighting up your yard. It is compatible with Alexa, Apple Home Kit and Google assistant as well as Nest or Samsung.
What we liked:
Weatherproof and suitable for use outdoors
Huge amount of colors and ambiance available
What could be better:
Signal can be blocked by metal and other strong materials
You may think there are only so many designs that can be offered when it comes to light fittings for the Philips Hue, but this may make you think again! A smart, ultramodern design is great for both indoor and outdoor decor and design, but it does have a very smart look when outdoors and also is weather resistant so you can mount outside your home and not have to worry at all about the fact it will be exposed to the elements.
All you need to install it is included with the product, and the manufacturers say this should take just a few minutes. Most people install this on the wall vertically but you can also install it on the ceiling if needed.
Like most of the products on this list it has 16 million different shades and a two-year warranty to protect your purchase.
Now for something a little different. The Philips Hue White Ambiance Wellner is a table lamp, designed to sit by you while you work or eat and provide some nice ambient lighting which you can totally control from your app, the Philips Hue Bridge or even with your voice via smart home controls. This works in the same way as the rest of the products on our list, and works with Amazon Alexa, Apple Homekit, Google assistant, Nest and more!
This table lamp has a replaceable LED bulb so if anything goes wrong you can switch it out and be sure the product still has life in it yet. It is also available at a pretty good cost, so you don’t have to spend a fortune to get the voice control and lighting options we all know and love Philips Hue for.
The design is very cool, with something of an ‘egg’ shape and a bit of a futuristic feel to it. You can easily imagine it on a desk or bedside table somewhere.
Though this is all very positive, there are some slight negatives to the product too. This is another of the Hue options which doesn’t support color other than numerous tones of white light to help with concentration or to set the mood. A feature that could really improve this light is wireless compatibility and not having to have it plugged in during use. This is what is on offer with the Hue Go model, but this model does not offer the same compatibility. This means that you have to rely on a cord to power it which isn’t quite as convenient.
It is clear from the design of this model, the Philips Hue Calla, that it has been designed for use as a light for your backyard. It is the sort of stick light you might see lighting up a pathway or a porch. This is reinforced by the fact that this has been designed for use outdoors and can deal with a number of different conditions. It doesn’t need to be kept away from the rain!
This has the 16 million colors we’ve become accustomed to when using most of the Hue lights, and you can connect up to five on the same power supply, making them perfect for lighting up a long path.
This is compatible with Alexa, Apple’s homekit, or Google assistant.
There is a two-year warranty included but this is resistant to weather conditions so may last far longer than this.
This is a very clever way of using Hue to control lighting in your home and can be used to backlight things like televisions. A light behind can give a modern glow which can give an almost futuristic look to your home. It also looks good behind TV monitors, artwork and for many other uses.
These lights come with a power supply that you can connect up to three more Philips Hue lights to.
This has a two-year warranty and offers 16 million different shades. The manufacturers recommend that this is best used for televisions, and this makes it quite a niche product rather than something you can use for a variety of different spaces. These lights can be synced to the images on your TV to produce custom lighting that reflects the movie or game on screen.
What we liked:
Looks great behind a television
Can be used with other lights in the same power supply
Can sync with your movies and games for custom lighting
What could be better:
Not as many uses for these lights as some other models due to being a very specific design
A light strip is another niche way to use your Philips Hue and opens up more options. This is great in all sorts of backyard uses, you can put it on a porch or even along a planter to create an amazing and interesting look. For outdoor uses, it is weatherproof, meaning that even relatively extreme weathers can be dealt with by the striplight and you don’t need to worry every time the rain comes!
The light itself is flexible and can be fixed either straight or bending around things, you could even mount it circularly around the bottom of a tree if you wanted!
The standard two-year warranty is in place again, along with the 16 million colors that Philips Hue lights can offer. This is also available in two different sizes so you can choose the size which best suits your outdoor space. Like most of these products, it can be chained up and used with multiple other Philips Hue compatible lamps on the same power supply.
What we liked:
Great for use on porches and around planters
Easy to set up and flexible to mount
What could be better:
Not many indoor uses
Things to Consider
These types of products are pretty new to the market, so having a buying guide can be exceptionally helpful if you are in the process of working out which features will suit you the best. Here, we’ve tried to dive into both the benefits of Philips Hue lamps and also the numerous features which can help you to get the most out of your lighting. Not everyone realizes just how incredibly useful these products can prove in the long run.
Benefits of having a top-notch lamp for Philips Hue
Philips Hue lights really are the lamps of the future. It is not unrealistic to predict that in the future most homes will have some sort of system of ‘smart’ lighting, and Philips are leading the way. Finding the right choice of lamp can help in ways you may not have even considered.
Many people use smart lights for their sleep cycles, as the patterns can be set to mimic daylight and get your body feeling ready to rise in the morning and then ready to sleep in the evening. These rhythms can be exceptionally helpful for anyone who struggles with their sleeping patterns, and help you to keep a regular daily routine.
The other benefit of the ability these lights have to replicate more natural light is the fact they can help with SAD or Seasonal Affective Disorder. The body gets the same sort of benefits as being exposed to sunlight which can keep moods high.
You can also have a bit of fun with the colors and lighting settings. For instance, some of the lamps mentioned will even sync with games or movies to give an ambient or mood lighting and further help your experience. The light colors can also be set to be more relaxing or more suitable for focusing, depending on what you need. A white color temperature is more likely to help you to focus, whereas warmer yellows might help you to relax in the evening.
Features to consider when choosing a lamp for Philips Hue
The following are what we consider to be the most helpful and important features when it comes to your Philips Hue lamp. Each of these features should be taken into consideration. Think about how they affect the specific space in which you are planning to install your lamp.
Type of lamp
Naturally, you will probably have your eye on a certain type of lamp. It may be that you are looking for something to go by your bedside, or you might need a lamp to illuminate the whole room and sit flush on the ceiling. You may want a portable light in which case the Philips Hue Go is perfect for your needs.
Whatever the style or type you are looking for, Philips probably have something to suit your needs as the range is growing all the time.
Colors & light settings
There are some lights within the range that simply cover the warmth spectrum. Everything will be a ‘tint’ of white, with some having a warmer, more tungsten sort of feel and others having a specifically bright, white light. This is an option on every light in the range. You can alter the warmth with ease whether it is a more basic product or a more advanced one.
The advanced lamps, however, now incorporate full control over the colors. Some of the elite lamps give over one million (yes, you read that correctly) options for tints and colors. All the colors of the rainbow and much, much more. This can be great for mood lighting, parties or just watching a movie.
Compatibility with smart home technology
If you are trying to build a smart home with as much as you possibly can to be controllable via your voice or apps, you will probably have already chosen a smart home ‘hub’.
Whether this is the Apple, Google, Samsung or Amazon option is up to you, but make sure you choose a lamp which is compatible with the brand you have opted for.
If you’ve gone for Amazon Alexa to control your smart home, there’s no point buying a light which won’t link to this system. All the lamps on our list are compatible with the major smart home apps and tech.
Check the space you are working with and then measure out the dimensions of that space, so you can see if the specific lamp you’re looking for will fit. Some of these are quite compact, and the flush mount options don’t hang too far from the ceiling, so won’t take up too much space.
Length of cord (if applicable)
Though the Hue Go is an option which is cordless, there are products such as the Ambiance Wellner which require you to have the lamp plugged in. If you plan to use this on a desk or a bedside, it might be worth just checking the cord length so you know you won’t run into trouble or have to awkwardly use an extension.
Build and durability
There is a bit of variation in the durability of these lamps. Some are built with a bit more ability to last than others. They all come with a two-year warranty, which is positive, but ensuring something is built to last is still key. The LED style lamps don’t always have replaceable bulbs, so it is even more essential you get as much use as possible out of them and check their durability.
The installation process involves both the fitting and hooking up to your chosen smart home app. Some lamps are easier than others. Some will work pretty much straight from the box, others will require complex installation and may even need you to get professionals in to do the job. Take a look on the reviews at what people are saying about the difficulty level of installation.
Every product on this list has a two-year manufacturer warranty from Philips. This is a pretty generous warranty and protects your purchase.
A lot of the lamps which are designed for use as table lamps or portable lamps can be used when traveling, but the battery life isn’t always the best, with some models only offering 3-4 hours. However, this is still quite generous, considering not many lamps are able to offer this option.
The lamp can be turned on and off via the philips Hue app, as well as additional switches which can be configured if desired.
The Philips Hue Beyond gets our seal of approval as the very best on the market due to the fact that it has a huge amount of control, a full spectrum of colors and can be controlled however you see fit.
The Philips Hue White Ambiance Flushmount is also worth considering, and has a design which is probably more suitable for office spaces or rooms such as kitchens and bathrooms. Our team have rated this product very highly.
Another really great product which offers something different is the Hue Go. It could be improved with a longer battery life, but if you are looking for cordless and portable then this is probably the option best suited to you when finding the best lamp for Philips Hue
